Abstract

This work is an interpretation oí ecological adjustment effecterl by the agrio cultural societies in the second half oí the Late Period in thc Quehrada del Toro and the eastern border oí the Puna salto.jujeña (Argentine Republic). This paper is an unpublished chapter oí the thesis cntitled "Las socip.dades ngrícolas del Período Tnrdío en la Quebrada del Toro y nledaños", which has been recently partially published. Its rending will be carried out later on. The XIII th, XIV th., and half of the XV tb. centuries characterize, in this region, the development oí new techniques in agricultural systems; mainly the use of artificial irrigation, control of land erosion and application of fertilizers or manure. As a conseqnence of the development of these three principIes, a marked economical increase was ohtained which determined a notable demographic growth which, in tnm, gave considerable emphasis to urban life. For the better understanding of the archaeological context, the present ecological adjustment and economic simbiosis are used as indicatcrs, if they are ideally proyected to the archaeological pasto A series of biological and cultural concepts, and new definitions are also presented here, which could also be used in anthro· pological studies in the future.
