Abstract

The paper describes a sedimentary sequence (Carrizo Formation ) of the Upper Paleozoic outcropping in the valley of rio Seco de la Invernada, within the environment of the central Precordillera of San Juan. The sequence, 529m thick, is made up of a basal psamitic unit of eolian origen, a mostly pelitic unit considered to be lacustrine, and two uppermost units of sandstones, conglomerates and shales, whose origen is ascribed to rivers of moderate to high sinuosity. Some basaltic to rhyolitic sills are intercalated in the sequence. On the basis of a possible relationship with sedimentary rocks of the Ojo de Agua Formation, the age of the sequence is referred to the Permian s. l.
