Clays have been widely used to remediate wastewater contaminated with heavy metals. The goal of this work is to evaluate the effectiveness of natural and calcined clays for removal of Cd(II) from aqueous solutions. We selected four clay samples with medium mineral content from different regions of Argentina: illite (I), montmorillonite (M), ordered kaolinite (CO), and disordered kaolinite (CD). Each clay was characterized by means of X-ray Diffraction, Infrared Spectroscopy with Fourier Transform, and BET surface area. CD (II) adsorption studies were carried out under different Cd(II) concentrations, on both natural and calcined variants. The natural clay with medium montmorillonite content and the calcined clay with medium illite content had the highest adsorption percentage (M 95%, IC 76). We conclude that thermal treatment enhances the use of clay (I) from the area in the vicinity of Universidad Nacional del Centro de la Provincia de Buenos Aires (UNCPBA).References
