Abstract

An updated, annotated and illustrated catalog of the Astrapotheriidae (Mammalia, Astrapotheria) from Patagonia (Santa Cruz and Chubut Provinces) described by the Swiss Alcides Mercerat is presented. These specimens are part of the earliest collections of fossil vertebrates of the Museo de La Plata ("Old Collections") collected in the last decade of the 19th century, and are considered foundational of this institution. The catalog includes the figures of the new species described in the “Synopsis of the Astrapotheridae Family - Eocene of Patagonia” published by Mercerat in 1891. This author described eleven species, nine of which were new: Astrapotherium angustidens, A. voghti, A. burmeisteri, A. marshi, A. gaudry, A. robustum, Listriotherium patagonicum, L. filholi and Xylotherium mirabile; the other two species, Astrapotherium patagonicum Burmeister, 1879 and Astrapotherium magnum (Owen, 1853), had been described previously. The present revision of the Astrapotheria housed in the collections of the División Paleontología Vertebrados of the Museo de La Plata (MLP-PV) allowed us to identify 24 type specimens from the Synopsis of Mercerat. The catalog is based on information compiled from publications between 1887 and 1898 by F. Ameghino, R. Lydekker, and S. Roth, a number of unpublished records of references (acronyms and handwritten labels in schedula) of the type specimens found in the collection, and documents informing about the historical traceability and preservation of the identity of these specimens in the MLP exhibitions. The preparation of this catalog has allowed us to properly curate the collection of Astrapotheriidae type specimens, improving their conservation, and updating their contextual information. The catalog represents an important resource for future taxonomic research on the Astrapotheria from the Argentine Patagonia.
