Abstract

Francisco Vecchioli (1892-1945) trained as a painter and illustrator in La Plata, France and Mallorca. He adopted naturalism and verismo with a certain eclectic quality, resulting in innovative atmospheric values in his compositions. This can be seen in El ombú, a painting located in the first floor rotunda of the Museo de La Plata. His works refer to a city in full growth, whose transformations he would capture in natural and urban landscapes executed en plein air. Likewise, his representations refer to his trips to south and central Argentina, the pampas, and to European cities. Vecchioli´s works were included in exhibitions curated by prestigious critics and historians, he received numerous awards, was a member of artistic associations, taught at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes of the Universidad Nacional de La Plata, collaborated as a scientific illustrator at Museo de La Plata and in 1920 its director, Dr. Luis María Torres, invited him to paint the mural that is the object of this analysis (El Ombú).
